Beer for Toenail Fungus
While an ice cold beer may definitely hit the spot on a warm, summer’s evening or after a long, hard day’s work, have you ever imagined using beer for toenail fungus treatments?
Dark beer isn’t the only ingredient you will need for this unusual sounding treatment as anecdotal reports of the popular home remedy also call for the use of white vinegar and sachets of acidophilus. Acidophilus are a group of probiotics or “good” microorganisms that attack the “bad” bacteria responsible for nail fungus. Sachets of the probiotics are sold in health stores and places that sell natural or homeopathic items.
The acidic content of the beer and vinegar is also said to create a hostile environment in which the fungus is unable to live and thrive. The beer is used to soften the nails making it easier file and remove the infected areas with a pumice stone or nail file.
How to Do a Nail Fungus Beer Treatment
Guinness Stout is the brand of beer most often recommended for nail fungus beer treatments although any dark, stout type of beer should bring about the same results when used in conjunction with white vinegar and acidophilus.
To use beer for toenail fungus, mix one liter of room temperature beer, another liter of white vinegar, and a half of an acidophilus sachet together in a container large enough to soak your feet in. The feet and nails should always be washed with soap and water and then dried thoroughly before soaking.
Soak your feet in the beer mixture for about a half hour twice each day. After soaking, file the nails and then dry the affected areas thoroughly using a hair dryer but be careful not to burn your skin.
Depending on how widespread the fungal infection is, nail fungus beer treatments should be done on a twice daily basis for as little as three months to six months or longer.
The Pros and Cons of Using Beer for Toenail Fungus
Dark beer is easily accessible, provided you are of the legal drinking age, of course, and white vinegar can be found just about anywhere. Even the sachets of acidophilus are readily available through a number of vendors both online and off making this particular home remedy a seemingly wise choice for treating stubborn nail fungus. You also won’t have to worry about risking serious side effects as long as you don’t drink your concoction and drive before soaking your feet in it.
But regardless of how easy it may seem, do nail fungus beer soaks for the feet and toenails really work as well as fans of the treatment say they do, or is it just wishful thinking on their part?
Home remedies using common household items and products are highly sought after namely because of the great allure of using natural and inexpensive ingredients from the comforts of home as opposed to costly prescription drugs. Also, prescription medications for the treatment of toenail fungus have a host of serious side effects associated with them, something else most of us try desperately to avoid.
Over the counter treatments (OTC) using natural ingredients that have been tested for their effectiveness in addressing the causes of toenail fungus are worth considering, especially if you want to avoid taking prescription drugs. Although some OTC treatments are certainly better than others, almost all are definitely better than questionable home remedies when used correctly and in therapeutic dosages. In order to treat any condition the root of the cause must first be addressed. Merely masking the outward symptoms of toenail fungus does nothing more than bring about temporary relief while the problem continues to become worse. Consider all of your options for treating toenail fungus carefully before wasting precious time and money on “cures” that probably will not work.
